為什么要在感恩節(jié)食用火雞呢。這要從感恩節(jié)的由來說起。1620年，英國一批主張改革的清教徒，因理想和抱負(fù)不能實(shí)現(xiàn)而退出國教，自立新教，此舉激起了英國當(dāng)政者的仇恨。
這些清教徒們不堪承受統(tǒng)治者的迫害和歧視，先逃到荷蘭，9月初，乘船遠(yuǎn)渡重洋，準(zhǔn)備流亡美國。
船在波濤洶涌的大海中漂泊了65天，于11月終于到達(dá)了美國東海岸，在羅得島州的普羅維斯敦港登陸。當(dāng)時(shí)，此處還是一片荒涼未開墾的處女地，火雞和其他野生動(dòng)物隨處可見。

另外有一種說法是這樣的，在16世紀(jì)某一年的收獲節(jié)上，英國的伊麗莎白女王正在吃烤鵝。這時(shí)傳來消息說，西班牙的無敵艦隊(duì)(SpanishArmada)在前往攻擊她心愛的英國途中沉沒了，女王高興不已，于是又要了一只鵝來慶祝這一捷報(bào)。因此鵝也就成了英國豐收季節(jié)的愛鳥。
當(dāng)清教徒們從英國來到美國時(shí)，烤火雞代替烤鵝成了主要菜肴，因?yàn)楸泵来箨懟痣u數(shù)量更為豐富，比鵝更容易找到。
