我國古代在清明時節(jié)就有插柳植樹的傳統(tǒng)，而近代植樹節(jié)則最早由美國的內(nèi)布拉斯加州發(fā)起。19世紀以前，內(nèi)布拉斯加州是一片光禿禿的荒原，樹木稀少，土地干燥，大風一起，黃沙漫天，人民深受其苦。1872年，美國著名農(nóng)學家朱利葉斯·斯特林·莫爾頓提議在內(nèi)布拉斯加州規(guī)定植樹節(jié)，動員人民有計劃地植樹造林。當時州農(nóng)業(yè)局通過決議采納了這一提議，并由州長親自規(guī)定今后每年4月份的第三個星期三為植樹節(jié)。這一決定做出后，當年就植樹上百萬棵。此后的16年間，又先后植樹6億棵，終于使內(nèi)布拉斯加州10萬公頃的荒野變成了茂密的森林。為了表彰莫爾頓的功績，1885年州議會正式規(guī)定以莫爾頓先生的生日4月22日為每年的植樹節(jié)，并放假一天。
在美國，植樹節(jié)是一個州定節(jié)日，沒有全國統(tǒng)一規(guī)定的日期。但是每年4、5月間，美國各州都要組織植樹節(jié)活動。例如，羅德艾蘭州規(guī)定每年5月份的第二個星期五為植樹節(jié)，并放假一天。其他各州有的是固定日期，也有的是每年由州長或州的其他政府部門臨時決定植樹節(jié)日期。每當植樹節(jié)到來，以學生為主的社會各界群眾組成浩浩蕩蕩的植樹大軍，投入植樹活動。

The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in his adopted state and throughout the United States when he served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture. But his most important legacy is Arbor Day.
Why do the people plant trees? It is very easy. Because they want to protect the environment. There are many people who want to earn the money form only cutting down trees. So more and more trees are cut by them. But kind people want to protect the environment and make the air clean. So they plant trees as many as they can.
All these actions show that people should pay more attention to the environment. We want to make it better, don’t we? So we must plant more trees to protect the environment.In the years following that first Arbor Day, Morton's idea spread beyond Nebraska with Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota and Ohio all proclaiming their。 own Arbor Days. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate. (State Arbor Days) At the federal level, in 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Arbor Day is also now celebrated in other countries including Australia. Variations are celebrated as 'Greening Week' of Japan, 'The New Year's Days of Trees' in Israel, 'The Tree-loving Week' of Korea, 'The Reforestation Week' of Yugoslavia, 'The Students' Afforestation Day' of Iceland and 'Th he National Festival of Tree Planting' in India. Julius Sterling Morton would be proud. Sometimes one good idea can make a real difference.
