寫求職信要有機智和良好的判斷，下列幾點可供參考。
1、陳述事實，避免表示意見：與訓練和經驗有關的事實可以陳述出來，但應避免表示意見說這些訓練和經驗對所應征的工作將有怎樣的關系或好處。
2、不要批評他人：如果你要離開現職，可以說出原因但不要用批評的方式，雇主想要了解你，而非你的工作機會。
3、不要過份渲染自我：你當然認為有能力，夠資格才要申請某一職位，但不要過份夸大自己的能力或表現過份信心，尤其不要說出與事實不符的能力或特性來。
4、留意底薪：有的雇主要你提到希望的待遇。你要作良好的判斷，寫出你覺得可行的最低薪。開始就業的人應知道，與其尋得一份高薪的工作倒不如找待遇尚可而有升遷機會的工作。

應征函的第一段說明寫信的緣起目的，有些專家認為不宜用分詞子句，如下列各句作為第一句。因為這類句子被人用得大多，顯得陳腐，失去突出的特性。
Replying to your advertisement…… Answering your advertisement…… Believing that there is an opportunity…… Thinking that there is a vacancy in your company…… Having read your ad……
再比較下列三句。（a）句較差，經過修改后（b）句顯得較恰當。
１、（a）Replying to your recent advertisement in the Boston Evening Globe, I wish to apply for the position of sales manager……
（b）In applying for the position of sales manager I offer my qualifications, which I believe will meet your exacting requirements.

3、(a) Having read your advertisement in the New York Times for an accountant, I thought you might be interested in my application.

求職的人不得不提到希望待遇時，可用類似的句子：
1、 hesitate to state a definite salary, but, as long as you have requested me to , I should consider 6,500 a month satisfactory. 我對待遇總是遲遲無法定個確切數目，但既然您要我說明，我認為月薪六千五百元就滿意了。
