W：Why didn’t you show up for class this morning?
M：I don’t even want to talk about it. My car broke down.

M：Mum，it’s a quarter to six now. Time for the CBS TV show!
W：Not exactly，honey，our clock is 15 minutes fast.

W：I had a great time in Australia. I met a very cute old man with eyes like a koala.
M：What’s his name?

W：Do you often play tennis?
M：Yes，quite a bit. How about a game sometime after class?
W：Sorr y. I’m strictly a spectator—tennis，football，baseball，basketball，golf ...I watch them all，but I don’t do any sports myself.

M：Well，look at the map. This is the route I thought we could take on our hike.
W：How long is it altogether?
M：It’s about three miles.
W：That sounds OK. So，we start here at the parking lot and walk along the path to the waterfall.
M：Right. Then we turn left and walk up this small hill. The view from the top of the hill is worth the climb. You can eat a snack there.
W：Then we will follow this path down to the foot o f the hill. We can see an old church there.
M：We can spend a few minutes looking around the church，and have our lunch outside the church，about a two hours’ stay there. Then we walk along this path，turn south and come back to the car park.
W：How long do you think it will take us to complete the walk?
M：I think it will take about four hours，including breaks.
W：That’s fine. Are there road signs along the way，in case we get lost?
M：Yes，there are. They tell us which way to go and how far we have to walk.

W：Excuse me. Do you need any help?
M：Yes. I want to go to Tokyo Tower，but I’m really lost. This is my first visit to Japan，so I have no idea on how to ride the trains.
W：First，you need to buy a ticket to your destination. From there，it’s a hundred and thirty yen.
M：A hundred and thirty yen，Okay.
W：Then，get on the Hibita Subway Line at Platform 4.
M：Number 4，all right. Oh，and how often do the trains come round this time of day?
W：They come about ever y six minutes.
M：All right. And where do I get off the train?
W：Get off at Kamiyacho Station，three stops from here. The sign at the station is written in English，so you’ll be able to read it.
M：Three stops. Got it. Thanks for your help.

Okay，okay，let’s begin. Hello，everyone. My name’s Karl Roberts，and I’ll be your teacher for this class，Intercultural Communication.
Uh，to begin with，please take a look at the introduction in front of you. As you all should know by now，this class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3：15 to 4：50 pm. We will be meeting in this room for the first half of the course，but we will be using the research lab every other week on Thursdays in room 405 during the last two months of the class.
