篇幅過短和過長
太多的人想把他們的經歷壓縮在一頁紙上，因為他們曾經聽說履歷最好不要超過一頁。當將履歷格式化地縮到一頁時，許多求職者就刪除了他們給人深刻印象的成就。反之亦然。就拿那些在履歷上用幾頁紙漫談不相干的或者冗長的經歷的候選人來說，看的人很容易就會覺得無聊。所以，當你寫履歷時，試著問自己：”這些陳述會讓我得到面試的機會嗎?”然后，僅僅保留那些會回答”是”的信息。
決定其篇幅的因素包括有職業、企業、工作經歷、教育和造詣程度等等。最重要的就是，履歷中的每一個字都要能夠推銷該候選人。
人稱代詞和冠詞的用法
履歷是商業溝通的形式，它應該是簡潔和正式的，不應該出現“我”的字樣，且盡量少用冠詞。試看一例：
陳述：我已經開發了一種新的產品，它使銷售額增加了200萬，使部分銷路總量增加了12%。
應該寫成：新開發的產品使銷售額增加了200萬，使部分銷路總量增加了12%。
